Wow. I LOVE this cover! I have mixed feelings about the concept, but this author is an authentic old timer from the Bay Area and a former private eye, so he gets a pass. Also I was glad to read that this novel involves Sam Spade setting up shop in San Francisco and spending a lot of time in John's Grill. The cover though, so cool. RIP Dashiell Hammett.

After seeing these photos by Neil Krug, I definitely plan to (1) buy a Varicolor Filter, and (2) rent/re-watch Zabriskie Point.

Be sure to check out the new movie Crips and Bloods: Made in America when it plays in San Francisco February 20-26 at the Roxie. The movie was directed by Stacy Peralta, director of Dogtown and Z Boys, and former Golden State Warrior (once a Warrior always a Warrior) Baron Davis is the executive producer.

Go See Medicine for Melancholy

I was excited to see that this movie got a great write-up in the New York Times! And the Village Voice! Medicine for Melancholy was written and directed by Barry Jenkins and shot in San Francisco by my high school friend James Laxton. James is possibly the nicest guy ever and a SF native, so I'm glad to see that the film is getting some attention. I got to see Medicine for Melancholy when it premiered at the San Francisco International Film Festival, apparently it is getting a wider release. Opens today in Manhattan.
